To celebrate International Pronouns Day, Truly Hard Seltzer invited me to illustrate a customizable can cooler.

Truly is a clean, crisp and refreshing hard seltzer. Inspired by the LGBTQIA+ community and Truly’s array of delicious fruit flavors, I created a bright illustration with a positive reminder: Be Yourself. Respecting someone’s pronouns is a simple way to acknowledge their humanity. As a queer nonbinary person that uses they/them pronouns, I personally understand the importance of respecting someone’s gender identity. Truly asked me to illustrate a can cooler that is easily customizable with a permanent or temporary marker to display someone’s pronouns and showcase their pride in being unapologetically themselves. All profits were donated to GLAAD, the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.

Process

Creating an illustration that wrapped seamlessly around the can cooler was a detail I prioritized.

I sketched a concept that connected seamlessly on both ends, refined the outlines, and used Photoshop to digitally paint all the illustration elements. The individual pieces were also used in various social media assets. To promote the product launch, Truly asked me to take over their Instagram stories on International Pronouns Day to talk a little bit about myself and showcase some of the behind the scenes of the creation of the artwork.

Details

In order to normalize queer identities, representation is key.

To honor trans, nonbinary, and gender non conforming folks, I added details that represent a variety of identities. The colorful fruits, sparkly elements, and gradient background helped tie the whole piece together.
